Introduction of Fuwai Heart Hospital & Cardiovascular Institute
Fuwai Hospital was founded as the PLA Thoracic Hospital in 1956 and the Cardiovascular Institute was formed in 1962. As an affiliated cardiovascular specific institution of Peking Union Medical College and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Fuwai Hospital & Cardiovascular Institute is not only the national reference center but also the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention & Treatment Center of the Ministry of Health, also as the National Clinical Test Center of New Cardiovascular Drug, China Cardiovascular Technique Training and Cooperation Center and the Cardiovascular Training & Research Center of WHO in China. With the tenet of "Devotion, Humanity, Factualism and Progress" for five decades,Fuwai is now proud of its merited reputation in China and Aisa.
Currently, the hospital and institute has in total 2,100 employees and three of whom are members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). Fuwai Hospital now has 733 beds and 18 clinical centers with up-to-date equipment. As the national primary reference center for cardiovascular diseases, the annual outpatient/emergency treatments numbered nearly 300,000 while the inpatient treatments were in excess of 20,000 in 2007.
As the largest Cardiac Surgery Department (which is consist of Adult, Children and Vascular Cardiac Surgery Center) performing nearly 7,000 operations in 2007, it not only ranks first in terms of the number of cardiac surgeries being performed in China but also achieved an international leading level of success rate with CABG, valvular replacement, aortic / thoracic aortic aneurism replacement, congenital heart diseases and other difficult cases. Therapies such as the left ventricular assistant devices implantation for coronary heart disease, Phase-I complete aortic replacement, and "One-Stop" combined operations package for complicated congenital heart diseases have been warmly welcomed by patients.
The Cardiology Department, which comprises the Coronary, Hypertension, Arrhythmia, Pulmonary Vascular, Heart Failure, Clinical Pharmacology and Emergency Center, provides international advanced level interventional therapies such as PTCA, catheter ablation, pacemaker implantation and pulmonary thrombolysis. In 2007, the Cardiology Department performed more than 7000 interventional procedures in total while a success rate of 98.7% had been achieved in the Emergency Center. In order to provide better services, the hospital has developed a "Green Path" for acute myocardial infarction and urgent arrhythmias.
In 2004, the Cardiovascular Disease Preventoion & Treatment Center, Cardiovascular Regenesis Key Laboratory of Ministry of Health and the Cardiovascular Gene & Clinical Research Laboratory of Education Ministry were founded. At the same time, the Central Lab, Pathophysiology Lab and Experimental Animal Center were also reformed to be opened Lab. More than 5,700 manuscripts written by Fuwai employees have been published so far.
